By Tim Kelly TOKYO - The Russian Kalashnikov AK-47 and its derivatives have long been the assault rifle of choice for militant groups because of their rugged design, but some Taliban fighters are trading them in for captured U.S. guns as Afghanistan's government collapses. Video and pictures published by the Taliban on Twitter and elsewhere show fighters carrying M4 carbines and M16 rifles discarded by Afghan army units. Other images show Taliban forces capturing abandoned government vehicles. The U.S. guns are more accurate and have greater range than the their AK-47s, but on their own may not deliver much added capability on the battlefield. "Some of the hardware might be useful to have if looking to intimidate rival warlords, but that's about it," said Grant Newsham, a retired United States Marine Corps colonel. "They’ve done rather well with what they already had." Still, the image of U.S.-made weapons in the hands of the Taliban as it sweeps aside the Afghan National Army - funde...
By Timothy Aeppel - More people will work from home in the future - and if high-quality internet access is available to all Americans, that could lead to a sustained boost in worker productivity which could increase economic output by $160 billion a year. That’s the main conclusion of a new study released Wednesday by the Aspen Economic Strategy Group. Before the pandemic, about 5% of full workdays were done from home. That spiked during the pandemic as Americans hunkered down to avoid infection and, while it will decline, is expected to settle at about 20% of full workdays going forward, said Steven J. Davis, an economist at the University of Chicago who did the study with Nicholas Bloom of Stanford University and Jose Maria Barrero of the Instituto Tecnologico Autónomo de Mexico. “If you suddenly shift a lot of people to a different location, it becomes more important that this new location is a productive one,” and the quality of internet access is key to increasing productivity, s...
By Junko Fujita and Ece Toksabay TOKYO - There aren't any fans to watch the Olympic weightlifting in Tokyo this year, so that job effectively falls to the bored volunteers with little else to do after spectators were banned from venues. Clad in matching blue polo shirts emblazoned with the Olympics logo and grey waist pouches, volunteers of all ages stood around the cavernous Tokyo International Forum chatting and taking photos. When not watching the weightlifting, others sat on chairs in the corridor, playing with their phones. "I wanted to be a volunteer because I was born in the year of Tokyo's first Olympics. But to be honest, I don't have much to do here," said one 57-year-old woman who was supposed to be offering translation services. She applied for the position three years ago and went through a series of interviews and tests. "Without fans, maybe we can serve as fake spectators. In any case it is a good opportunity to see how things work at the Olympics and enjoy the events f...
- Facebook Inc will invest over $1 billion to support content creators through the end of 2022, the social media giant said Wednesday, as it aims to compete with platforms like TikTok and YouTube for the attention of top social media personalities. The investments will include bonus programs to pay creators who hit certain milestones on its apps, including photo-sharing network Instagram, and fund users to produce content, Facebook said. On Facebook, video creators and online gamers will receive a monthly bonus if they hit milestones for earnings Stars, a form of digital tipping that fans can use to pay their favorite creators during live-streamed videos. Instagram's bonus programs will include incentives to use Reels, its copycat TikTok feature that showcases short-form video clips. Creators will earn money based on how their Reels videos perform, the company said. Facebook is opening its wallet to court creators as rival social media platforms are wooing top influencers with million...
By Nandita Bose MEXICO CITY -U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris told Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that ties were entering a "new era" as they met on Tuesday to try to lower a record spike in migration from Central America by attacking poverty. Harris and Lopez Obrador witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding about the work the two countries' development agencies do in Central America. They then met for talks billed as focused on "root causes" of migration. "I strongly believe that we are embarking on a new era that makes clear the interdependence and interconnection between nations," Harris said at the start of the meeting. Lopez Obrador, who built a working relationship with Donald Trump despite the former U.S. president's economic threats and insults against Mexico over migration, said his government was very interested in maintaining good relations with Washington. The administration of President Joe Biden has been struggling with the number of migrant...
By Ankur Banerjee and Michael Erman -Pfizer Inc and German partner BioNTech SA have filed for full U.S. government approval for their COVID-19 vaccine and are targeting production of 4 billion doses of the shot next year, mostly for low- and middle-income countries. Full approval for the vaccine, which has been authorized on an emergency basis, could help ease hesitancy to get the shot in the United States and other wealthy countries. Pfizer also pointed to new, higher manufacturing forecasts as evidence of its ability and intention to serve poorer nations that have received very little of its vaccine so far. In a letter sent to Pfizer employees and posted publicly, Pfizer Chief Executive Albert Bourla said the company already has deals or is in talks with countries to supply 2.7 billion doses this year, of which 40% are expected to go to middle- and low-income countries. The supply balance should tip into the less wealthy countries' favor over the second half of this year, and Pfizer...
Late last night, the Daily Mail made explosive allegations that the Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that he would "rather see bodies piled high in their thousands" than impose a third lockdown on the country.  Yet, it was just over a year ago that Boris Johnson was himself admitted to Intensive Care suffering with Coronavirus. After being placed on oxygen and recovering thanks to the hard work and dedication of the NHS staff who cared for him, the prime minister revealed that his condition was so grave that he believed he was on death's door. Following his recovery and subsequent discharge, Johnson published a seemingly heartfelt video expressing his gratitude for the 'love-powered' NHS that "saved [his] life" - and personally thanking two nurses, "Jenny from New Zealand" and "Luis from Porto", who stood by his bedside for "every second of the night" for their care. Many in our esteemed mainstream media seemed to believe that Johnson's "near-death" experience would change him as a m...
