Laying the Foundations

Let me begin this post by thanking the entire EOS community for your unwavering support throughout this EOS journey and especially over the course of the weeks following my initial announcement to launch an EOS Foundation.

WE DID IT!

On August 25 the BPs reached network-wide consensus, passing MSIG #2 to re-activate the eosio.saving bucket with 2% inflation and approving the transfer of ~3.4m EOS to eosio.grants.

After many failed attempts over the years since EOS’s launch, and for the first time in EOS’s history, a funding source external to block production was achieved. On August 25, the EOS Foundation was born, which will allow EOS to turn the page and begin the next chapter of its eventful journey.

In my previous update, Introducing the Pillars of the EOS Foundation, I outlined a high level overview of what I plan to accomplish as the Executive Director of the Foundation. In a continued effort to offer transparency to the EOS community, I want to share some of the things that have already transpired in the days following the MSIG passing.

Immediately following the execution of MSIG #2, international trademarks were filed and a legal counsel was retained to represent the EOS Foundation. A name and a domain was also secured. The EOS Foundation also began scoping out the initial requirements for branding, website design, and external marketing firms.

Additionally, I have been actively seeking out and interviewing potential candidates to fill the 7th open advisory board seat. I will continue to survey the EOS community and the larger blockchain ecosystem to find the right candidate to fill this very important role.

Headhunting and interviews for Core team members are also ongoing. I have interviewed seven(7) individuals since the 25th. More information on such candidates will be forthcoming, but please keep in mind that most qualified candidates are currently in leadership positions with other projects or companies, so even after accepting a full time position with Core, there may still be a period of transition until their roles can be made public. I am looking for individuals who are humble, passionate and hungry for change. The startup environment is very specific and requires a certain type of person at the onset.

Lastly, some initial grantees are being vetted internally and are being prepared for presentation to the board. These candidates are all projects which have already added immense value to EOS with proven track records for creating value within the ecosystem. We look forward to empowering them to continue their much appreciated work so that they are able to amplify those efforts while the EOS Foundation itself continues to establish itself and its processes.

The EOS Foundation grants and sponsorships being provided to developers, businesses and individuals building on EOS will be without a doubt one of its most pivotal functions. However, for this process to fully manifest, it will require a team with a mixture of technical, business, and product expertise to understand the scope of the network’s needs through proper due diligence in order to allocate capital in a meaningful manner for maximum impact.

먼저 최근 몇 주간 이오스 재단 출범에 대한 저의 첫 글을 비롯, 지금껏 지칠줄 모르는 성원을 보내주신 이오스 커뮤니티 모든 여러 분들께 감사드립니다.

우리가 해냈습니다!

지난 8월 25일, BP들의 전폭적인 합의로 eosio.saving 계정에 2%의 인플레이션을 커뮤니티 개발 기금으로 저축하고 ~340만 개의 이오스를 eosio.grants 계정으로 이체하기 위한 MSIG #2가 통과되었습니다.

지금껏 이오스 역사상 있어왔던 여러 차례의 시도 끝에, BP들의 수익 외에 개발 자금을 공급할 수 있는 추가 자금원을 만드는 시도가 드디어 첫 성공을 알리게 되었습니다. 8월 25일 출범하는 이오스 재단이 이오스 역사의 새로운 장을 열게 된 것입니다.

제가 앞서 올렸던 글 <이오스 재단의 구성요건(Introducing the Pillars of the EOS Foundation)>에서는, 제가 이오스 재단의 상임이사로서 달성하고자 하는 상위 레벨의 목표를 두루 개관한 바 있습니다. 이번 포스팅에서는 이오스 재단의 행보에 더 높은 수준의 투명성을 기한다는 차원에서, 지난 MSIG 통과 이래 어떤 일들이 있었는지에 대해 공유 드리고자 합니다.

MSIG #2 통과 직후, 저희는 이오스 재단의 국제 상호를 출원하고, 재단의 법무를 대리할 법무법인을 고용하였습니다. 재단의 이름과 도메인도 확보를 완료하였습니다. 브랜딩을 위한 초기 구성 요건을 정의해 나가는 동시에 웹사이트 제작과 외부 마케팅 에이전시에 대한 물색도 시작하였습니다.

더불어 현재 공석으로 남아있는 일곱 번째 자문위원(Advisory Board) 자리를 채우기 위한 인터뷰도 진행중에 있습니다. 자문위원은 그 중요도가 매우 높은 포지션인 만큼, 이오스 커뮤니티 뿐만 아니라 블록체인 산업계 전체를 두루 살피며 적합한 인재를 찾고 있는 중입니다.

코어 팀 멤버에 대한 인터뷰와 헤드헌팅도 계속해서 진행되고 있습니다. 지난 25일 이래 5명의 후보와 인터뷰를 진행해 왔습니다. 이들 후보에 대한 정보는 앞으로 차차 공개될 것입니다. 다만, 자리에 적합한 고급 인재들은 대개 이미 다른 기업이나 프로젝트의 수장직을 맡고 있는 경우가 많아, 채용이 확정된다 하더라도 기존의 포지션을 정리 후 이오스 재단에의 취임을 정식으로 공표하기까지 시간이 조금 걸릴 수 있다는 점을 미리 말씀드립니다. 저희는 현재 겸손하고 열정적이고 변화에 목마른 인재를 찾고 있습니다. 스타트업은 기성 기업과 그 환경이 매우 다르며, 참여하는 개개인에게 요구되는 자질과 역량도 차별됩니다.

재단의 기부금(grant)을 처음으로 받게될 수혜 프로젝트에 대한 물색작업도 내부적으로 완료되어 이사진의 승인을 위한 프레젠테이션 준비 작업이 한창입니다. 이들 1차 수혜 프로젝트들은 이미 이오스 커뮤니티에 많은 공헌을 쌓아온 곳들이 될 것입니다. 이오스 재단은 이들이 지금껏 해온 노력에 더 큰 힘을 실어주는 한편, 재단 자체적으로도 내부 프로세스와 조직 구성을 공고히 해 나가는데 힘을 기울일 것입니다.

이오스 체인 위에 가치를 더하는 개발자, 비즈니스, 그외 각종 형태 기여자들에게 기부금과 스폰서십을 제공하는 것은 이오스 재단이 수행할 가장 중요한 일들 중 하나입니다. 하지만 이러한 기능이 제대로 수행되기 위해서는 네트워크의 니즈를 깊이 이해하고 수혜 프로젝트에 대한 제대로된 실사(due diligence)를 통해 적절히 자원을 안배하여, 최소 비용으로 최대 효과를 이끌어 낼 수 있는 역량이 반드시 필요합니다. 이를 위해서는 기술, 비즈니스, 프로덕트 등 다양한 탤런트를 가진 훌륭한 팀이 필수입니다.

이오스의 새로운 미래를 건설하는데 인내와 신뢰, 그리고 자신감을 보여주신 커뮤니티 모든 여러분들께 다시금 감사 드립니다.
