In Season 3 of Pomelo, the team reallocated $155K of the matching pool to fair-playing grants. These funds were released back into the pool because the team’s fraud analysis resulted in disqualifications and removal of fraudulent donations.
After the adjustments, many grants received more than a 90% increase in their matching allocation.
So it pays to be a fair player!

Rules for Applications
Attention: grant owners!
👉 1. Grant applications must be for a public good, meaning the deliverable is non-rivalrous and non-excludable.
What will you build that will be available for free, for everyone to access?
If your application focuses on your business rather than a public good, your application won’t be approved. You need to find the public good within your business and modify your application to focus on that.Example: An NFT collection is unlikely to qualify as a public good, as NFTs are excludable.Consequences: If your grant doesn’t qualify as a public good, it will be labelled “action required.” Grant owners are given the opportunity to adjust their application to focus on the public good.👉 2. Grant owners must provide progress updates each season.
Donors want to know what progress you’ve made with your project since last season. Did you achieve your commitments? What challenges did you face?Example: The most successful grants on Pomelo describe in detail what they committed to last season and what they delivered with the funds from Pomelo. If they didn’t deliver, they explain why and the challenges they faced. Some grant owners provide updates to the Pomelo community as new items are released, throughout the year.Consequences: For returning grants, the Last Season Update field is mandatory. However, you decide how detailed you get with this section. Take the time to explain your progress and refer to your specific commitments to earn trust and build your reputation in the community.👉 3. Donor contributions and matching funds must be used to complete the project described on your grant page.
If you take donations and matching funds and don’t build what you proposed, the community will notice.Example: A grant owner doesn’t complete anything they promised and returns the next season, without explaining why in the last season update field.Consequences:– Loss of reputation, credibility, and trust. The community will remember that you didn’t deliver and you won’t be successful on Pomelo.– If we have evidence that a grant owner is using the funds donated through Pomelo on something other than the public good, the grant will be withdrawn from the season and the owner won’t be approved in the future.👉 4. Grant applications must be original and not plagiarized from other sources.
Do not copy grants from other platforms.Example: A grant owner submitted a grant that was copied from Gitcoin Grants, with some minor updates to make the project relate to EOS.Consequences: Disqualification of the grant.Rules for Donations
For grant owners and donors.
👉 1. Do not offer payment, gifts, or other benefits in return for donations.
AKA quid pro quo.Do not offer any type of deal to reciprocate donations to grants. This rule also applies to Collections, where a grant owner must not offer anything to a collector in exchange for their grant being added to a collection.Examples: A grant owner offers an NFT drop, direct payments, or donations in return to anyone who donates to their grant.Consequences:– Clear and definitive evidence of quid pro quo (e.g. social media post) results in immediate disqualification of the grant.– If the evidence is not as explicit, further investigation is required.👉 2. Do not create a new identity or fake accounts to contribute to grants.
AKA Sybil attack.This is when one person pretends to be multiple different people (by creating multiple Pomelo accounts) to make donations to a grant, thus receiving a larger portion of the matching pool.Example: For donations to be labeled Sybil, they must show multiple suspicious patterns, originating from fraudulent accounts.Consequences:– Donations that show patterns of Sybil attack are collapsed or removed, which reduces the matching pool allocation for a grant.– When there is evidence that the grant owner was involved in the Sybil activity, a grant will be disqualified.👉 3. Do not covertly coordinate with others to unfairly manipulate the system.
AKA collusion.When people act in coordination that results in their benefit and others’ detriment. Example: When an individual or entity provides funds to several others to then use in providing donations to specific grants.Consequences: Donations that show patterns of collusion are removed, which reduces the matching allocation for a grant. If there is evidence that the grant owner participated in the collusion, a grant will be disqualified.👉 4. Do not donate to your own grant.
Pomelo’s user interface prevents a grant owner from donating to their own grant. Don’t work around this by moving or transferring your funds to someone else to self-donate.Example: When a grant owner transfers their own funds to their spouse, who then donates those funds to the grant owner’s project.Consequences: If there is evidence of self-donation, the donation will not count toward the matching allocation. Depending on the severity and evidence, the grant may be disqualified.🚨 Proposed amendments to self-donation rules 🚨
Starting with Season 4, we propose the following amendments to self-donation rules to provide more clarity and consistency.
To give time for awareness and your feedback, the changes will not be enforced in Season 4, but we will monitor for them and issue warnings for violations.
Can a team member (i.e., an active participant that is helping to build the project) donate to their team’s grant?– Currently, yes. But we want to hear from you if core team members listed on the grant should be prevented from donating to it. How could that be enforced?– Don’t move funds around so you can donate to your own grant. Teams can’t pay team members to donate.Can I create a grant with an account that represents my organization, and donate to it with another account that represents me personally?– No, this is prohibited by our rules on Sybil attacks.– Organization accounts are on the Pomelo roadmap.Can an Eden member run in Eden on a platform to take the Eden winnings to donate to their own grant?– No, this counts as a self-donation.Can Eden members donate to other Eden members’ grants?– Yes. There are lots of different projects coming from the many individuals and teams that are part of Eden, so simply being an Eden member doesn’t prevent you from donating to Pomelo grants owned by other Eden members.– Of course, this assumes there is no collusion with others to donate to specific grants, which is against Pomelo’s rules.We want to hear the community’s feedback on the above proposed changes. Watch for a survey following Season 4, so you can share your thoughts and help guide the setting of rules on Pomelo.

Are large donations allowed?
You can make large donations, and there is no limit on how much you can donate to one grant.
However, large donations are not as effective as you may think. For example, if you make a donation of 1,000 EOS to a grant, 200 EOS will go to the 20% Pomelo fee.*
Plus, as a single donation increases in size, the grant will see a diminishing return on the matching allocation. The quadratic formula reduces the impact of large donations so they receive less of a match compared to a small one.
Notice how in the GIF below, the estimated match curve flattens as the donation amount increases:

Community Watch
If you see a grant owner breaking the rules, let the Pomelo team know using the Report button on the grant’s page. Reports from the community provide insights that help with the team’s investigations.

允许大额捐助吗?
你可以进行大额捐助，而且Pomelo也不会限制你可以捐助多少给一个项目。
然而，大额捐助并不像你想象的那么有效。例如，如果你捐助1,000 EOS给一个项目，其中200 EOS将流向 20% Pomelo费*。
此外，随着单个捐助规模的增加，项目在匹配池上的份额将逐渐减少。二次融资机制削弱了大额捐赠的影响，因此与小额捐赠相比，大额捐赠的匹配度更低。
