Pomelo Season 4 Analysis: Matching Pool Distribution

I don’t know about you, but Pomelo Season 4 left us wanting more! Pomelo gained the new collections feature, which the community received with much enthusiasm. In fact, 15% of your donations were made through collections. We look forward to seeing how you will continue to use this new tool in future seasons.

Season 4 saw the community take a tremendously active role in monitoring grants and donations to hold them accountable to Pomelo’s rules. This season, we received the most submissions from community members about possible suspicious activity.

We highly value these reports from community members. They are an immense help to the team as we perform our analysis and a great step forward on our path to put more of Pomelo’s governance in the hands of the community. Thank you! 🙏

What do we look for during analysis?

Pomelo uses the quadratic funding mechanism to allocate the matching pool of funds to eligible grants. This method requires accurate tracking of how many donors contribute to each project, including how many of those donor accounts are real unique humans and not multiple fake accounts created to game the system.

After donations close, the Pomelo team audits the season results to identify any intent to exploit the system. The team focuses on ensuring grants follow the Pomelo Terms and Conditions, and where there is evidence of violations, makes adjustments.

Primarily, rule breaking falls into the following categories:

Offers and exchanges (quid pro quo)

Pomelo’s rules prohibit grant owners from offering payment or other benefits in exchange for contributions to their grant.

If the Pomelo team sees clear evidence like an explicit bribe, we remove the grant from the matching pool immediately. If the evidence is not explicit, we present the case to the community for feedback to inform our policies going forward.

Sybil attack and collusion

Sybil attack involves the creation of multiple Pomelo accounts by the same entity or individual to facilitate multiple donations to a project and claim a larger portion of the matching pool.

Collusion is where participants agree to coordinate multiple donations that essentially come from the same individual or group to unfairly influence the system.

Depending on the evidence of deceptive intent, we may disqualify the grant or collapse the donations so that each group counts as a single donor. Due to quadratic funding, this means that some grants will receive less from the matching pool and others will receive more.

What did we find?

Overall, our analysis found less attempts to cheat the system than last season.

Our findings, including detailed evidence, have been shared with matching partners and we have received their support for our decisions. Our conclusions also align with findings in the EOS Support Audit Report and information from individual community members.

Grants disqualified for quid pro quo (offers and exchanges)

Based on suspicious donation patterns and multiple reports from the community, we sent inquiries with bounties to the donors of some grants. Our goal was to further investigate if incentives were offered. We received replies that provided matching evidence that confirmed donors were paid in exchange for donations to the grants below.

Grants disqualified for Sybil and/or collusion

Disqualified grants have multiple patterns of fraudulent donations with evidence of deceptive intent. For both grants listed below, the source of funds for multiple donors can be linked to a grant owner or team member. For the second grant, we also received evidence of collusion.

Grants with adjusted matching allocations

When we remove the donations that are violating the rules, it broadly affects the matching allocations as fraudulent donations are often made to a variety of grants to make them seem legitimate. A reduced matching allocation does not necessarily mean that the grant was malicious.

For the grants that had their matching allocation reduced, some donations to these grants show patterns of Sybil attack originating from one person or a group of people.

4 grants had their matching allocation reduced by 83% to 99%3 grants had their matching allocation reduced by 44% to 62%3 grants had their matching allocation reduced by 15% to 26%

Of course, many grants had their matching allocations increase due to disqualifications and collapse of donations, as this releases more of the matching pool. This season, $99,482 was redistributed to grants as a result of the adjustments.

Appeals

If you would like to appeal a decision, send a description of the action taken and any evidence you have that supports your appeal to support@pomelo.io by February 3, 2023.

Claiming your matching allocation

After the appeal period, qualified grant owners will receive an email with instructions on how to complete Know Your Client (KYC) screening, so you can claim your matching funds.

🚨 NOTE! Self-donation rules 🚨

For Season 4, we proposed some amendments to the self-donation rules. We stated we would not enforce the rules that season, but would monitor for violations and issue warnings.

One of the updates was that team members (i.e., active builders on the project) should not be allowed to donate to their team’s grant. Another was that Eden members cannot take their Eden platform winnings and donate them to their Pomelo grant.

Don’t send funds to someone else (e.g. a spouse or significant other, a family member, or a friend) to donate to your team’s grant.

Warnings for violations

If we had enforced these rules for Season 4, action would have been taken on the grant, Reward distribution smart contract for proxy. There were several large donations from core team members, which would have been removed from the matching allocation.

Keep reading to see how the matching pool was distributed by grant category, and region.

Most categories stayed consistent with Season 3, however, DeFi was an exception as it jumped from 8.9% in Season 3 to 20.5% in Season 4, tying with Ecosystem Growth at the top. Arts & Media dropped from 16.8% to 8% this season.

We saw some shifts in how the matching pool was distributed to regions this season, where East Asia moved ahead of North America and Europe to reclaim the top spot (as in Season 2). Southeast Asia saw a big jump from 0.8% to 13% in Season 4.

分析过程中，我们在追求什么?

规则破坏主要分为以下几类:

女巫攻击涉及由同一实体或个人创建多个Pomelo账户，以对同一个项目进行多次捐助，从而谋求从匹配池中获得更大占比。

共谋是指参与者同意协调来自同一个人或团体的多笔捐助走向，来不公平地影响系统。

根据欺骗意图以及证据，我们可能会取消项目资格或减少捐助占比，也就是将一个欺骗群体的所有捐助结算为仅一个捐助者。由于二次融资机制，这意味着一些项目将从匹配池中获得更少占比，而另一些未违规项目就可以从而获得更多占比。

我们发现了什么?

总的来说，我们的分析发现，与上个赛季相比，欺骗系统的尝试减少了。

我们的调查结果，包括详细的证据，已与相关合作伙伴分享，我们的决定得到了他们的支持。我们的结论也与EOS Support 审计报告中的发现和个人社区成员的信息一致。

取消资格的项目有多种形式的欺骗行为，并有恶意欺骗意图的证据。对于下面列出的两个项目，多个捐助者的资金来源可以与项目所有者或其团队成员联系起来。对于第二个项目，我们也收到了共谋的证据。

当我们删除违反规则的项目后，匹配池分配情况也被广泛影响。因为欺骗型捐助以各种形式出现，试图逃过大家的审查。被减少匹配金额的项目并不意味着该项目一定是恶意的。

对于匹配金额减少的项目，一些捐助显示来自一个人或一群人的女巫攻击模式。

上诉期结束后，合格的项目所有者将收到一封电子邮件，说明如何完成KYC验证，以便您可以申领匹配资金。

🚨注意! 自我捐助规则🚨

在第4季中，我们对自我捐献规则提出了一些修改。同时也声明，我们不会在本赛季执行该规则，但会监控违规行为并发出警告。

其中一个规则修改是，团队成员(即项目中的活跃建设者)不被允许向自己团队的项目捐款。另一个是Eden成员不能把Eden平台奖金捐赠给他们的 Pomelo 项目。

同时也不能把钱转给其他人(例如配偶或重要的人，家庭成员或朋友)来捐助自己的项目。

违规警告

假设我们在第4季中执行了这些规则，那么我们会对这个项目，Reward distribution smart contract for proxy，也做出行动。因为有几笔来自核心团队成员的大额捐助，这些本应从匹配池占比中删除的。

거짓행위의 증거에 근거하여, 저희는 그란트를 실격 시키거나 기부를 합병하여 매 그룹을 한 개 단일 기부로 간주합니다. 쿼드라틱 펀딩에 의하여, 일부 그란트는 보다 적은 매칭풀 분배를 받게 되며, 기타 그란트는 보다 많이 받게 됩니다.

저희가 규정을 위반한 기부를 제거함으로써 매칭풀 분배에 대하여 광범위하게 영향을 주게 되는데 이는 사기 기부가 진실된 것처럼 보이기 위하여 부동한 그란트에 기부를 진행하기 때문입니다. 감소된 매칭풀은 반드시 그 그란트가 나쁜 행위를 진행했음을 뜻하진 않습니다.
