On Friday, Facebook revealed that following its recent 6-hour outage users were still experiencing issues using its apps and services. The initial outage was sparked by an alleged error that took place during a routine maintenance check on its data centre network.

While users on Messenger were unable to send messages, Instagram users experienced trouble when trying to load their Instagram feeds.

"We're aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologize for any inconvenience," Facebook tweeted.

By no surprise, social media users quickly took to Twitter to share memes about Facebook's second outage this week.

Downdetector, a web monitoring group revealed that on Friday there were over 36,000 problems with Instagram and a further 800 with Facebook Messenger.

Using a variety of sources such as user-submitted errors to create status reports, Downdetector is able to find outages.

The recent outage is the largest Downdeetector has ever experienced, with billions of users unable to access their social media accounts.
