Pomelo uses quadratic funding to distribute matching funds to grants. If you’ve participated in a Pomelo season, you’ve seen the magic happen as the individual donations are amplified by quadratic funding! Read on to learn more, including how it can work for you as a grant owner or donor.
What is quadratic funding?
Quadratic funding is a way to fund public goods. It has two main parts: a crowdfunding round and a large matching pool of funds donated by matching partners. During the crowdfund, individuals vote for the projects where they see the most value by donating funds. Then quadratic funding is applied to allocate the matching pool based on those contributions.
What is compelling about quadratic funding is that it places more value on the number of contributors, not the actual amount donated. It puts the power in the hands of the individuals, not the groups with the most tokens. The community decides how the matching pool of funds is allocated.
How does quadratic funding work?
On Pomelo, contributors show their preference for projects by donating to them. Projects receive these donations as immediate funding. As more contributors donate to a project, the impact of previous donations increases. Once the donations close, the matching funds are distributed.
The projects with more contributors receive a higher allocation from the matching pool of funds. The magic of quadratic funding is that the size of the contributions doesn’t matter as much as the number of contributors. You can have a huge impact with very little money.
Quadratic funding is the best way to fund public goods because it favours a large community donating rather than smaller groups with more money.

A Pomelo grant raised $2,668 from 159 contributors. This resulted in the grant receiving $16,932 in matching funds, a 535% increase after quadratic funding was applied.Another grant raised $4,187 from 199 contributors, which resulted in a matching allocation of $49,274. A massive 1,077% increase in funds! 🤯
In contrast, a grant that raised $199 from only 21 contributors received $253 in matching funds, a 27% increase.

In the above scenario, Grant #1 receives the highest match amount ($448.04) because of its 10 contributions of $1. All of the grants have the same funded amount and the number of contributors is what affects the match amount.
Tips for grant owners
Quadratic funding emphasizes the number of contributors, so it’s valuable to create awareness and advertise the benefits of your project to the EOS community.
Promote your grant! Sell your project to the community and gain their support using pitch sessions.Reach out to your personal community on social channels and encourage them to donate to your grant.Translate your grant description to other languages to reach a wider audience and potentially receive more donations.Share specifics about what you’ve achieved since last season (for returning grants).
Tips for grant donors
You’ve got the power to fund public goods that will help EOS thrive!
Attend or listen to recordings of pitch sessions as an easy way to learn more about projects and ask questions of grant owners.Small donations go a long way. You can have a big impact with small donations.Encourage your friends to donate! Act on opportunities to grow the community.Look for last season updates. Grant description pages have a dedicated field for returning grant owners to provide updates on what they’ve accomplished since last season.
Challenges of quadratic funding
Quadratic funding has some challenges, but they can be managed. Attackers can try to cheat the mechanism of quadratic funding, through Sybil or collusion attacks, to unfairly receive more of the matching pool.
A Sybil attack is when someone creates multiple fake accounts and splits up contributions across them, usually all coming from one source account.Collusion is a covert agreement between individuals to work together to unfairly influence the system for their own benefit.
How Pomelo defends quadratic funding
Pomelo defends against such attacks in multiple ways. Sybil and collusion are prohibited by Pomelo’s terms of use and the team uses all available tools to identify these transaction patterns. Violation of the rules can result in reduction of matching pool allocation, disqualification, or being banned at the user level.

Community members share some of the responsibility for identifying rule breaking. If you see someone breaking the rules, let us know using the Report button on their grant page.
Donors can increase their trust bonus to magnify the impact of their donations. Boost your trust bonus by verifying your passport or linking several social accounts, or both. The more trust items you complete, the more impact your donations will have. The trust bonus helps protect against Sybil attack as it allocates additional matching funds to donations that are more likely from a real person.
Fortunately, it’s easier to be a good community member than to cheat the system. Plus, the more donors Pomelo has, the more difficult it is for Sybil attacks to be effective.
