Everything you need to know about public goods on Pomelo
For a grant to participate in Pomelo, it must be a public good. Public goods are items or services that are freely available and benefit everyone equally.

There are two main requirements:
Non-rivalrous means there is always enough of the good to go around, and it doesn’t run out as more people use it. In other words, you don’t have to compete with others for a public good.Non-excludable means the good and its benefits are available to all for free, and people cannot prevent others from using it.Some examples of public goods include law enforcement, national defence, public parks, roads, and natural resources like clean air. Governments provide many public goods by funding them through taxation.

A public good often has benefits that reach a wider group beyond the primary user of the good. This is known as positive externality. For example, when one person gains an education, their skills and knowledge benefit their entire community.
Digital public goods have a lot of potential for positive externality. Open source code that anyone can access, modify, and reuse means a more equitable world as they don’t need to develop the code from scratch.
We see this spillover of positive benefits when Pomelo grants build goods and services that can be adopted and reused by the rest of the EOS community.
Other types of goods
The opposite of a public good is a private good. A private good is rivalrous and excludable — an item you purchase that is in limited supply and can only be used by one person at a time.
Imagine the competition we see during the holidays for that popular, must-have toy. There are only so many of that toy available and the cost reflects its scarcity, so parents must shop early and have the money to cover an item that is limited. Not everyone is able to buy a private good.

What are some examples of public goods on Pomelo?
When you complete your grant application, you’ll be asked to choose a category for your project from the list below.

If you’re notified that your grant application has a status of action required, you may need to adjust it to focus on public goods.
Often, when grants don’t qualify at first, the application is focused more on the business rather than the public good. Pomelo is a platform for the EOS community to fund public goods that will be freely accessible and available to all. A business is not a public good, but the core technology a business builds to enable its products and services may be.
Our goal is to foster open collaboration within the EOS ecosystem and encourage grants to build core components that can be reused by the rest of the community.

Funding public goods isn’t easy. Because they are freely available and there’s always enough for everyone, people are able to get the full benefits of a public good without contributing towards its creation or development. This is called the free-rider problem.
Pomelo overcomes this problem by enabling individuals to donate to the public good projects that they believe are most beneficial for the community right now. Then the magic of quadratic funding means that the projects with the most unique donations receive even more funding to create their public good.
