📢 $155K of matching pool redistributed to fair players!
Thank you to everyone who participated in Pomelo Season 3! The Pomelo team has analyzed the results and it’s time to claim your matching funds.
After analysis and adjustments, the Pomelo team reallocated $155,112 from donations and grants that violated the rules to grants that followed the rules. 🥳
That’s more than one-third of the total matching pool saved from bad actors and given to fair players! 🤯
During the review, we identified new patterns and methods to increase Pomelo’s defence and accelerate our analysis for next season. Thank you for your patience as we completed this essential work.
What do we mean by analysis?
Because the quadratic funding method requires accurate tracking of how many contributors donate to each project, the Pomelo team audits the results to identify any intent to exploit the system.
The team focuses on ensuring grants follow the Pomelo Terms and Conditions, and where there is evidence of system abuse, makes adjustments to the matching pool distribution. For a short and simple version of the rules, see our Pomelo Wiki.
We also rely on you, the community, to report suspicious grants so we can investigate them. 🙏 We appreciate the efforts of community members who reported questionable grants this season and provided insights that aligned with the team’s investigation.
What do we look for?
The goal is to have the matching pool democratically distributed, so we watch for evidence of people trying to game the system. We also look for deceptive and fraudulent grants, which includes grants that are created only to collect funds or grants that are plagiarized.
Offers and exchanges (quid pro quo)
Pomelo’s rules prohibit grant owners from offering payment or other benefits in exchange for contributions to their grant.
If the Pomelo team sees clear evidence like an explicit bribe, we remove the grant from the matching pool immediately. If the evidence is not explicit, we present the case to the community for feedback to inform our policies going forward.
Collusion
Collusion is where participants agree to coordinate multiple donations that essentially come from the same individual or group to unfairly influence the system.
Depending on the evidence of deceptive intent, we may disqualify the grant or collapse the donations so that each group counts as a single donor. Due to quadratic funding, this means that some grants will receive less from the matching pool and others will receive more.
Sybil attacks
A Sybil attack involves the creation of multiple Pomelo accounts by the same entity or individual to facilitate multiple donations to a project and claim a larger portion of the matching pool.
In our analysis, we use all available information to determine Sybil patterns on chain and on the web, both public and private.
What did we find?
We shared our findings, including detailed evidence, with matching partners and have received their support for our decisions. The results are final and there will be no appeals.
We disqualified 9 grants this season, which is down from 11 in Season 2. Affected grants are listed below grouped by the patterns of fraud that were detected.
Grants disqualified for collusion and Sybil
The Pomelo team found similar patterns of deception and fraud in the donations made to the 6 grants listed below, including heavy collusion and Sybil. The first 3 grants were created by the same owner, who was disqualified in Season 1 for quid pro quo and is now banned from Pomelo.

The other 3 of the 6 are disqualified from Season 3 for the same signs of heavy collusion and Sybil activity. Grant owners may return to Pomelo in the future:

The grant owner of EOS Africa Awareness Movement disclosed to us that some donors demanded that their EOS be returned or else. The owner of the first 3 grants founded the community where these threats came from. The grant owner of EOS Africa returned the EOS after feeling they had no choice.
Grants disqualified for fake grants and Sybil
The 3 grants below were created by the same owner. One of the grants, EOS Leaderboard — Follow EOS Twitter Accounts, is a copy of an ETH Leaderboard grant on Gitcoin, with minor updates to make the grant relate to EOS instead. All 3 grants have an overwhelming majority of donations that show patterns of Sybil attack, originating from fraudulent accounts. Taken altogether, this indicates likely malicious intent that resulted in the disqualification of all 3 grants.

Grants with adjusted matching allocations
When we remove the donations that are violating the rules, it broadly affects the matching allocations as fraudulent donations are often made to a variety of grants to make them seem legitimate. For those grants that had their matching allocation reduced, some donations to these grants show patterns of Sybil attack originating from one person or a group of people.
9 grants had their matching allocation reduced by 84% or more5 grants had their matching allocation reduced by 37% to 79%
Of course, many grants had their matching allocations increase due to disqualifications and collapse of donations, as this releases more of the matching pool. This season, $155,112 was redistributed to fair-playing grants! 👈😁

How much did we raise?
As we mentioned in Let the Pomelo Season 3 Festivities Begin, approved grants were vying for total matching funds of $366,186.
Then, the EOS community jumped in and raised $133,399 to support a record 172 approved grants!
That’s a total of $499,585 for public goods on EOS!
What category took the most matching funds?
Most categories stayed steady in Season 3, including Ecosystem Growth at the top. However, we saw an increase in distribution to Arts & Media grants, which took second place with an increase of 13.2% from last season.

What region got the most matching funds?
Some shifts occurred in this area in comparison to Season 2. North America received the most matching funds, moving up from second in Season 2. Less participation from East Asia decreased that region’s matching distribution, making room for Latin America and Europe to receive more funds.

저희가 찾아낸 부정행위는 ?
저희는 저희가 찾아낸 상세한 증거가 포함된 부정행위를 매칭 파트너와 공유했으며 그들은 저희의 결정을 지지하였습니다. 아래 결과들은 최종적인 것이며 항소를 받아들이지 않습니다.
