Multiple matching pools are here!

Starting in Season 6, Pomelo Grants will have several matching pools. As a grant owner, you’ll need to choose one matching pool for your grant when you submit your application.

Pomelo Grant donors, get ready for the season to get even more exciting as we break ground with multi-pools.

What do we mean by multiple matching pools?

In addition to the pool that you’re used to, Pomelo Grants will also have additional matching pools that may be focused on a specific category (e.g., GameFi) or be for a specific ecosystem.

Multiple matching pools (multi-pools): Matching pools with varying amounts and eligibility criteria that may be dedicated to a specific category or ecosystem.
A diagram that shows how multiple matching pools from multiple matching partners could look. There’s Matching Partner 1, with 3 matching pools: all pools must be EOS ecosystem and public goods. One is $35K for any category, one is $65K for GameFi, one is $65K for the EOS EVM. There’s Matching Partner 2 with one pool for public goods on Telos that’s $35K. Then we see Matching Partner 3 has 2 pools, both for the Antelope ecosystem. There’s a $40K pool and a $60K pool.

Multiple matching partners

As part of the work to make multi-pools happen, Pomelo Grants will also be able to welcome multiple matching partners. Thanks to inter-blockchain communication (IBC), we can have any Antelope chain that supports IBC come onboard and use their own tokens wrapped on EOS.

Multiple matching partners: Partners building on Antelope chains that can fund a matching pool using their token.

A matching partner can fund multiple pools with different categories and eligibility criteria. Partners define the acceptance criteria for their matching pool (e.g., IBC matching pool with X tokens).

How will multi-pools work?

Each matching pool will have varying amounts and eligibility criteria. Grant owners choose the pool they want to submit their grant to during the application process.

Grant owner selects their matching round

A grant owner will select their desired matching round in the grant application, checking to make sure their grant meets the eligibility criteria.A grant must match the ecosystem, category (if specified), and public good requirement (if applicable) to be approved for a matching round.

Grant owner selects their category

Select the matching round first, as the categories you can choose will change depending on which round you choose. If a category that has traditionally been included in the general pool has its own matching pool in a season, then that category will be removed from the general pool. If a grant has a pending status, you can switch to a different matching round, but once your grant joins the season, you can’t switch. If your grant fits the criteria for a different matching round better than the one you selected in your application, the Pomelo team may switch your grant to the appropriate pool and notify you.

Donors can contribute in EOS and more

Donors can contribute to grants in any matching round with EOS or other supported tokens (e.g., TLOS).More tokens will come into play as more matching partners and communities join.

Why have multi-pools?

Having more than one pool will provide wider opportunities for ecosystem development. Instead of increasing the amount of one large pool, adding pools with diverse eligibility criteria spreads the funding among more projects and ecosystems.Pools that are focused on a specific area of development will give teams the opportunity to attract a spotlight on their work, more so than in a more general pool. Those projects making progress in a category that has its own pool will potentially have access to more attention and funding.Multiple pools allow more Antelope-based partners to take advantage of the features of Pomelo Grants. They can bring their community members to one place to vote on what’s most valuable for their ecosystem and harness the power of Pomelo’s quadratic funding formula to allocate the funding pool accordingly. As more networks build their ecosystems with funding through Pomelo Grants, there’s the potential to increase cross-chain collaboration as teams deliver public goods that can be used in more than one ecosystem.

What’s next?

This is just the beginning. Season 6 will give us all a chance to see how multi-pools and partners work on Pomelo Grants, and we’ll be looking for your feedback on what went well and where to improve.

We look forward to how this development will shape the future of Pomelo Grants!
