Chief Delegates #24

The penultimate Chief Delegates meeting is underway with a slightly looser agenda, but they did make a number of recommendations that they feel might be useful for the future.

LONDON (Bywire News) - After last week’s drilled focus on the bylaws, it was a much more fluid conversation this week, as – on the eve of April Fool’s Day – the Chief Delegates pondered some of the recommendations they might pass on. Here are some of the highlights.

First up as always, we’ll remind you all about just who these guys are.

  • Aaron Cox: Co-Founder Greymass.
  • Chris Barnes: 1st Eden Mock Election winner.
  • Jesse Jaffe: EOS Bees Queen.
  • John Williamson: Founder Violet Garden.
  • Brandon Lovejoy: Multimedia Creator.
  • Randall Roland: Founder of EOS Support.

First up it was personal updates.

Chris Barnes: Chris has been working on his EOS block producer investigation going through links, websites and Twitter. He warns that what he’s found is not good, so the document he plans to release shortly should make for interesting reading.

MyVoteEos.com campaign is ramping up. The much-delayed launch is definitely around the corner, and you can support it now on Pomelo.

Jesse Jaffe: The EOS Bees are preparing for their March report. They are also working on Fractally on EOS brainstorming sessions with Nova Crypto. They have pulled together a group of people who are interested in getting Fractally and Eden up and running.

Aaron Cox: The first round of the account creation is done and they are waiting for a round of iteration on it. Other than that, they are getting back up to speed now that the blue papers are out of the way. He also says that Anchor is looking for more people in order to scale up their capacity and respond to whatever the community wants of them next.

John Williamson: A short update from John who simply says he’s been buried in work for Fractally.

Brandon Lovejoy: Brandon has made initial donations on Pomelo and has spent time getting ready for the April 9th election. He is getting the technical sidelined up so the election can be audited.

Randall Roland: Randall is meeting up with the Fractally team who will do some testing and see how their system will run. He also met up with the DAOBull team which won the B1 hackathon in 2021, but as we covered, were one of many projects thinking of leaving Eden due to their disappointment in the support on offer from B1.

Like most of the other Chief Delegates, he also has his project up on Pomelo.

Pomelo Season 2

Funding has opened and already a good turnout. With Eden being integrated into the Pomelo process the Chief Delegates looked at the Eden and Pomelo relationship and any projects they want to plugin.

Chris Barnes has two projects up. Antifragile education is back up featuring a draft children’s story written by his wife which includes a few character names that might be familiar to many people in the EOS community, such as ‘Dan’ and ‘Brock’.

The second is his MyVoteEOS campaign which is looking to build funds for marketing and advertising around EOS.

The EOS bees also have three projects in the works. The first is to manage the Twitter and YouTube feed for future Chief Delegates.

The second has been posted alongside EOS support. They have a referral system in mind for EOS but parts of that will be open source.

The main EOS Bees grant focuses on influencers. It will include the integration of Tipit which means you can reward people for liking or retweeting your post.

Aaron Cox has one up for Anchor – growing the team support. They have a long laundry list of things they are working on, and they need a bigger team in order to do it.

Shameless plugs out of the way, it’s on to a list of recommendations. These are generally things that they would like to pass on which they haven’t managed to address so far.

Social ownership

Their struggles to gain control of the online and social presence for Eden have been well documented. Now that Eden is gaining its independence, they can get a unified communications strategy for future Chief Delegate administrations. They suggest all things are on the table including the name of the brand for future chiefs and the community to decide on. This is one project which might be ideal for the Pomelo pitch Jesse Jaffe currently has to provide social support for EOS.

One-month elections

The group also considered a one-month election cycle proposed by Jesse Jaffe. Monthly elections would solve the accountability problem he believes exists in Eden.

“The accountability problem is the biggest in Eden. That’s why the Fractally team went completely the other way.” They moved from a model in which you promise to do the work to one in which you have done the work and demand recognition.

Aaron Cox supported the idea in principle but pointed to administrative impediments. “We need machines in place. I think it’s a good goal, but we need an admin team, development support and marketing support to make it happen.”

Chris Barnes argued that one month was too short. “If we want to turn this into something which has governance power, one month is too short,” he said. If anyone is running on a project one month is not enough time. Three months, he says, gives people long enough to do what they’ve done.

A compromise is suggested by Aaron Cox who raises the prospect of two Edens – one to concentrate on governance and another on allocating funds. The governance might be three to six months between elections while fund allocation could happen more quickly.

John Williamson argues that we need enough data to gain trust in the elections. If this is only happening every three months, it will take a long time to get enough data to show that the election process is consistently successful. As things stand, they have had one election which went well, but they can’t know for sure if that was luck more than judgement. They need more options to see if the process works well.

Gaining permissions to active keys

Randall says he is working with Fractally to ensure a smooth transition of permissions from admin to admin. The proposal triggers some debate.

For Aaron Cox, this all depends on what Eden needs to be. The point of the change, he says, is to have Eden be independent. If Eden is staying the way, it is there is nothing to be done. Whatever happens, it must be done in a way that ensures Eden's independence.

John suggests there could be other active people holding active permissions by way of a fallback. Chris responds to this fall-back option by saying he disagrees as it would surrender independence to non-elected people who may not always be trustworthy.

New elections

A further question is on triggering new elections and being able to expel people from the community.

Opinions on this can be summarised like this:

  • John Williamson: Likes the idea but no solution yet.
  • Jesse Jaffe: Does see the value for bad actors. On the other hand, you only get funds if you win in the first round of the election. He feels it’s unlikely that someone who proved to be a bad actor would not be elected in the second round.
  • Brandon Lovejoy: Wouldn’t it be useful to clean the membership list of people who are inactive?

With snap elections the consensus is that it would be useful, but the community does not have the mechanisms to put in place to achieve that. One-month elections would reduce the need for a snap election as there is never much time between elections. A snap election would be useful in a three-month period.

Exit tax

Another discussion focused on the concept of an exit tax. If you pay someone to do work outside the Eden community, you would be subject to an exit tax. This would encourage people to keep work within the Eden community, but with the community still being small, that might not be practical.
