We got you! Follow our step-by-step guidance to make your grant clear and direct. Our template will help you draft an effective project description that donors will love.
Before you write 🤔
Focus on the public good in your project. Make the public good the first and primary thing you talk about. This is essential to your application being approved to participate. If you need help determining what qualifies as a public good, read our article, What’s a public good?Plan what you want to do and how you will achieve it. Pomelo sees grants return season after season, building on what they have achieved. Whether you are a new or returning grant, consider what you can do before the next Pomelo season. Break large milestones into smaller manageable parts.Note the main points you want to cover to organize your thoughts. Remember, first describe the public good, then explain your broader project as an example implementation of the public good. This will help structure your application when you’re writing it.Plan ahead for multimedia. Create a high resolution image to make your grant stand out. Consider including a relevant video.Think about your audience. What is the best approach to present your project to them? Try to speak to different levels of technical knowledge.Introduce acronyms the first time you use them.Define or explain concepts that not everyone may know.Write ✍

Cover the following in your grant description:
Describe the public good. How does it qualify as non-rivalrous and non-excludable?What is the problem you’re solving or the need you’re addressing?What is your solution?What are the outcomes or deliverables you’re planning for this season?What are the positive benefits of your public good? Who will benefit?How can the public good be used by others after its release?How do you plan to deliver? What is your proposed timeline?What is your budget? Create a flexible plan, so you can break your deliverables into smaller increments, depending on how much funding you’re allocated. Plan smaller milestones that you can achieve with different levels of funding.If the public good that you’re raising funds for functions as part of a larger product, you can explain how the public good portion works as part of it. Keep in mind that funding from Pomelo can only be used for the public good portion. Think of the larger product as an example of how the public good can be implemented.What are your long-term goals?Who are you? What knowledge and skills qualify you for this project? Who have you partnered or collaborated with?Revise 🤓
We understand — you’re tempted to skip this section. But you got this. The time you spend revising what you’ve written will mean more donors read through your entire grant.
Look at the big picture: the content, organization, and presentation.
Is any information unnecessary or repetitive?Is any essential information missing?Is the level of detail appropriate for your audience?Is the content focused on your project (the public good) and what you plan to achieve this season? Specify what you’re going to deliver and how it’s a public good.Does the order of your sections make sense?Are your headings accurate and useful?Are paragraphs short?Do you walk the reader through your project details at a good pace?Edit 🔍
This is where you correct errors and hard-to-read sentences that will distract your audience from your message. Leave your application alone for 24 hours (if possible) before editing.
Delete unnecessary and repetitive content.Read it out loud. Rewrite any sentences that sound awkward.
